El problema es que la vida de estas bonitas aves en libertad ha retrocedido de forma importante. Aunque son aves sociables, los machos de cardenal verde no lo son con los otros machos de su misma especie y reaccionan de forma muy agresiva. Su caza ha sido prohibida para proteger a la especie y se les puede ver por la pampa argentina, los bosques abiertos, arbustos y las sabanas.
